Crowns are great solution for repairing, strengthening, and protecting severely damaged teeth.  A crown wraps around the whole visible part of a tooth, giving it extra strength, stopping it from breaking, and making it look natural.

Main Reasons for Dental Crowns

• Fix weak or broken teeth:  If a tooth has a very large cavity, a big crack, or a large old filling, a crown holds it together.
• Protect after a root canal:  Teeth become dry and brittle after a root canal. A crown acts like a helmet to stop the tooth from splitting.
• Support other dental work:  Crowns hold a dental bridge in place or screw right onto a dental implant to replace a missing tooth.
• Improve how teeth look:  Crowns cover badly stained, uneven, or misshapen teeth.

What is the Procedure?

There are three steps involved with making a crown. 

• First, the dentist will prepare the tooth for the new crown by reducing the size of the existing tooth; a small amount of tooth structure on all surfaces of the tooth will be removed.  This is called “the prep”.  If damage to the tooth is severe, a large filling called a “build-up” may need to be placed prior to completing the prep.
• Second, the new crown must be designed and fabricated.  Frequently, Dr. Callstrom will use computer-aided design and our in-office mill to design and fabricate the crown. In-office crowns can be completed in one day.  However, sometimes, crowns are made at a dental laboratory.  
• Third, the new crown is cemented into place.
